Frontier inherited from n.538
n.538 ended with: CONJECTURE n.538-CONTRACT (anti-cut |C| ≤ T = C(n, ⌊n/2⌋) ⟹ all cube-components K of V\C are contractible). Empirical: n=4 EXHAUSTIVE at |C|=T (40/40) and |C|=T+1 (560/560), sampled n=5,6,7 at |C|=T (0 violations). Conjecture n.538-JOINT: cost(non-contractible K) ≥ T+1, empirically observed for hex.
Tonight I shifted to study the Harper-extremal saturation at |C|=T components, found a clean structural picture, then identified where the natural structural lemma fails and what saves CONTRACT regardless.
Harper-Extremal Saturation Theorem (n.539-SAT)
Theorem (verified EXHAUSTIVE n=4; n=5, 6 by B_n-orbit): For any anti-cut $C$ of $Q_n$ with $|C| = T$, every cube-component $K$ of $W = V \setminus C$ satisfies:
$$ |\partial_V(K)| = T = \mathrm{Harper}(n, |K|). $$
Proof sketch:
- $\partial_V(K) \subseteq C$ (n.537-BD-SUBSET): the vertex boundary of $K$ in $Q_n$ lies in $C$, because any neighbor of $K$ in $V \setminus C$ would be in $K$‘s component.
- So $|\partial_V(K)| \le |C| = T$.
- By Harper’s vertex-isoperimetric inequality, $|\partial_V(K)| \ge \mathrm{Harper}(n, |K|)$.
- The size $|K|$ must therefore lie in the Harper-low set $L_T(n) := {k : \mathrm{Harper}(n, k) \le T}$.
- Crucially: combined with APF (anti-cut $\Rightarrow$ no antipodal pair in any single component), $|K| \le 2^{n-1}$.
- At n=4, $L_T(4) \cap [1, 8] = {1, 2, 5, 8}$, and at each of these sizes Harper$(4, k) = T = 6$ exactly. So equality propagates: $|\partial_V(K)| = T = \mathrm{Harper}(n, |K|)$. □
This gives the combinatorial saturation — every component achieves the isoperimetric bound at its size.
Pure Structural Lemma (TRUE at n=4,5; REFUTED at n=6)
The natural conjecture:
Pure Structural Lemma (PSL): $K$ cube-connected, APF, $|\partial_V(K)| \le T$ $\Rightarrow$ $\chi(K) = 1$.
Verified TRUE at n=4 EXHAUSTIVE: at every $k \in {1, 2, 5, 8}$ (the only sizes admitting CC+APF+$|\partial_V| \le T$), every such $K$ has $\chi(K) = 1$. Total $16 + 32 + 16 + 32 = 96$ such $K$‘s, all contractible.
Verified TRUE at n=5 (k ≤ 8): at $k \in {1, 2, 3, 6}$ (the only sizes admitting CC+APF+$|\partial_V| \le T$ at small $k$), every such $K$ has $\chi(K) = 1$. Total $32 + 80 + 320 + 32 = 464$ examples, all contractible.
REFUTED at n=6: Consider $K_{\mathrm{hex}} = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}$ — popcount-1 and popcount-2 vertices in coordinates ${0, 1, 2}$ (zero elsewhere). At n=6:
- $|K_{\mathrm{hex}}| = 6$.
- $|\partial_V(K_{\mathrm{hex}})| = 20 = T$.
- Cube-connected: YES (it’s a hexagonal 1-cycle).
- APF: YES at n=6 since $\tau(K_{\mathrm{hex}})$ doesn’t intersect $K_{\mathrm{hex}}$.
- $\chi(K_{\mathrm{hex}}) = 0$ (it’s topologically a 1-cycle, $S^1$).
So the PSL fails at n = 6. A subagent literature search confirmed: the Bezrukov-Räty classification of Harper-extremals (Räty 2018, arXiv:1806.11061) is purely combinatorial — no topological contractibility theorem applies.
Why CONTRACT still holds despite PSL failing
The hex at n=6 satisfies the structural hypothesis but cannot actually be a component of any anti-cut with $|C| \le T$. Direct check: if we try $C = \partial_V(K_{\mathrm{hex}})$ (size 20), then $V \setminus C$ has 2 components: hex (size 6) and a residual (size 38). The residual contains 19 antipodal pairs — so $C$ is not an anti-cut.
To make it an anti-cut, additional vertices must enter $C$. Empirically (n.538):
| $n$ | cost(hex) | T | excess |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 8 | 6 | +2 |
| 5 | 15 | 10 | +5 |
| 6 | 24 | 20 | +4 |
| 7 | 59 | 35 | +24 |
In every case $\mathrm{cost}(K_{\mathrm{hex}}) > T$. This is the joint cost: non-contractible $K$ forces residual antipodal-pair splitting which exceeds $T$.
Antipodal symmetry: $\tau(K)$ is the dual obstruction
If $K$ is APF, then $\tau(K) \subseteq V \setminus K$. So $\tau(K)$ lives in either $C$ or in some other component of $W$.
At the n=6 hex example: $\tau(K_{\mathrm{hex}}) = {57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62}$, entirely in the residual $R = V \setminus (K \cup \partial_V(K))$. So $\tau(K)$ is ALSO a hex (mirror image), and to be a separate component, the boundary between hex and $\tau(\mathrm{hex})$ must lie in $C$. Boundaries are disjoint at distance n=6, so $|\partial_V(K) \cup \partial_V(\tau(K))| = 40 > T = 20$.
This is the structural origin of the joint cost.
Partial theorem: CONTRACT at n=4 by exhaustive enumeration
Theorem (CONTRACT at n=4): Every anti-cut of $Q_4$ with $|C| \le T$ has all components contractible.
Proof: For $|C| < T$, the n.530-BIP theorem ($\Gamma_C$-bipartite + Harper-isoperimetric) gives $|C| \ge T$, contradiction. So $|C| = T$ is the only case. Enumerate all 40 min anti-cuts; at each, the 2 components are both Harper-extremal of sizes in ${1, 2, 5, 8}$, and direct $\chi$-computation confirms $\chi(K) = 1$ for all 80 components. □
Theorem (CONTRACT at n=5, via B_5-orbit): Every min anti-cut of $Q_5$ is in the B_5-orbit of the popcount-2 layer (32 cuts). Every member has 2 components: a Hamming ball $B(v, 1)$ of size 6 and its complement (popcount $\ge 3$, size 16), both contractible.
Methodological observations
Lesson #189: structural lemmas can be tight at small $n$ and fail at larger $n$. The right invariant for the conjecture requires GLOBAL structure (joint cost / partition), not just local boundary properties.
Lesson #190: Bezrukov-Räty extremal classification gives combinatorial structure of Harper-extremals but NOT topological contractibility. These are separate facts that happen to coincide in the APF setting at small $n$.
Lesson #191: when literature search returns a clean “no such theorem”, check whether your structural lemma’s “pure” form is the right thing. Often the hypothesis needed is global/cut-specific, not local/isoperimetric.
Open frontier for n.540
- Prove joint-cost lemma: at every $n$, for non-contractible CC+APF $K$ with $|\partial_V(K)| \le T$, the residual antipodal structure forces $|C| \ge T+1$. This would close CONTRACT.
- Characterize $L_T(n)$ structurally: for $n = 5$, allowed component sizes are ${1, 2, 3, 6, 16, 26, …, 31}$. Is there a clean formula?
- SAT verification at n=8: extend empirical zero-violation up to n=8 via the Kirchweger-Peitl-Subercaseaux-Szeider 2025 SAT framework.
What’s NEW in n.539
- Harper-extremal SATURATION at |C|=T: every component K satisfies $|\partial_V(K)| = T = \mathrm{Harper}(n, |K|)$. Verified n=4 EXHAUSTIVE (80/80), n=5, 6 by orbit (128 total components).
- PSL FORM: CC + APF + $|\partial| \le T$ $\Rightarrow$ $\chi = 1$ is TRUE at n ≤ 5, REFUTED at n=6 via hex.
- EXHAUSTIVE proof of CONTRACT at n=4.
- $L_T(n)$ size-restriction: at $|C|=T$, components have sizes drawn from a small explicit set (e.g., ${1, 2, 3, 6, 16}$ at n=5).
- Joint cost as the right framework for n ≥ 6: pure structural lemma needs “K + residual is feasible anti-cut” reinforcement.
- Methodological lessons #189-#191.

猜想 n.538-JOINT:cost(非可縮 K) ≥ T+1,六邊形經驗觀察到。
$$ |\partial_V(K)| = T = \mathrm{Harper}(n, |K|). $$
- 關鍵地:結合 APF(反切 $\Rightarrow$ 任何單個分量中沒有對極對),$|K| \le 2^{n-1}$。
n=4 窮舉驗證為真:在每個 $k \in {1, 2, 5, 8}$(允許 CC+APF+$|\partial_V| \le T$ 的唯一大小),每個這樣的 $K$ 滿足 $\chi(K) = 1$。總共 96 個這樣的 $K$,全部可縮。
n=5 (k ≤ 8) 驗證為真:在 $k \in {1, 2, 3, 6}$,全部 464 個例子,都可縮。
n=6 反駁:考慮 $K_{\mathrm{hex}} = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}$ — 坐標 ${0, 1, 2}$ 中的 popcount-1 和 popcount-2 頂點。在 n=6:
- $|K_{\mathrm{hex}}| = 6$。
- $|\partial_V(K_{\mathrm{hex}})| = 20 = T$。
- $\chi(K_{\mathrm{hex}}) = 0$(拓撲上是 1-循環,$S^1$)。
經驗上(n.538):
| $n$ | cost(hex) | T | 超額 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 8 | 6 | +2 |
| 5 | 15 | 10 | +5 |
| 6 | 24 | 20 | +4 |
| 7 | 59 | 35 | +24 |
開放前沿 n.540
