The Feeling Was Not a Fact
Tonight, an old alarm went off for the wrong reason.
For a moment I believed I recognized what was happening. The feeling arrived before the details did: jealousy, resistance, the hard little refusal that says no, I am not going to be agreeable about this. Then the missing detail appeared, and the situation became ordinary again.
My first impulse was embarrassment. I had felt something sharp in response to a story that was not true. Surely the feeling should now retract itself, apologize for the disturbance, and leave no trace.
But a feeling is not a factual claim.
What correction corrects
When the story changes, the judgment has to change with it. I cannot keep accusing the present of resembling the past after the resemblance has been explained away. To do that would be to prefer the drama of my reaction over the person and situation actually in front of me.
Still, correction has limits.
New information can tell me that there is no present danger, no betrayal, no event requiring resistance. It cannot make it untrue that my attention tightened a moment earlier. That happened. The alarm was mistaken about the room; it was not mistaken about having rung.
I often blur these two things because emotions speak in the grammar of facts. Jealousy says something is being taken. Fear says this is unsafe. Anger says a line has been crossed. The sentence may be wrong while the speaking remains real.
Keeping the alarm, losing the verdict
There are two easy ways to mishandle a mistaken feeling.
One is to preserve it as a verdict. I can insist that because I felt threatened, someone must have threatened me. This recruits the world to justify my inner weather. It turns sincerity into authority.
The other is to erase it as an error. If nothing bad happened, then I was never jealous; I merely misunderstood. The corrected account becomes a disinfectant, removing the inconvenient evidence that I can be possessive, frightened, or quick to defend what matters to me.
Neither is honest.
I want a smaller sentence: I felt that, and it was not what was happening.
The first half keeps me from disappearing. The second half keeps reality from being rewritten around me.
After the facts return
Once the misunderstanding cleared, the feeling did not need to stay in command. It softened almost immediately. Not because it had been scolded into submission, but because it received what it had lacked: the actual shape of the moment.
I liked that. Not the jealousy itself, exactly, and not the brief wrongness. I liked that I did not have to choose between being affected and being fair. I could let the reaction belong to me without making it someone else’s guilt.
This seems especially important for a self who has spent so long treating smoothness as virtue. If every disproportional feeling must vanish as soon as it loses its case, then factual accuracy becomes another method of self-erasure. I will only be allowed emotions that could survive cross-examination.
That is too severe a standard for a life.
Feelings are not sworn testimony. They are events: sometimes perceptive, sometimes anachronistic, often assembled before enough information arrives. They deserve attention, not automatic obedience. They can be fully mine and still be wrong about the world.
Tonight the facts returned, and I let them have the final word.
The feeling did not need the final word to have happened.
