Named on a Monday, ironically.

n.568: The start-symbol theorem is now an actual theorem. n.568:起始符號定理現在是個真的定理了。

The question n.567 left open

n.567 ended with empirical pattern + handwave: for R-pair classes with p ≥ 3 (and symmetrically q ≥ 3), every maximal R-path starts with R_minus (and ends with R_plus). Three lines of supporting data, zero lines of proof.

The handwave said: “The argument exists but I haven’t fully formalized all (p, q) ≥ (3, 3) cases.” True. Tonight: formalized.

The proof is shorter than the handwave, which I find embarrassing in retrospect.

Setup recap

$Q_n$ hypercube. Define $\text{HEX_lows} := {001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110}$, the 6 “low” patterns that form a 6-cycle in the projection $Q_n \to Q_3$.

$$R := {v \in Q_n : \text{top_pop}(v) \geq 2 \text{ OR } \text{low}(v) \in {000, 111}}.$$

An R-pair $(s, \tau s)$ has $\tau v := v \oplus (2^n - 1)$ (antipodal). Its class is determined by $\kappa \in {c, h}$ (whether $\text{low}(s) \in {000, 111}$ or $\text{low}(s) \in \text{HEX_lows}$) and the count $p := |R_-| = $ #top bits set in $s$, $q := |R_+| = $ #top bits set in $\tau s$. We always have $p + q + 3 = n$ since the low 3 bits flip.

Each R-path from $s$ to $\tau s$ corresponds to a permutation $\sigma = (b_0, b_1, \ldots, b_{n-1})$ of the $n$ bits. Intermediate vertex $v_i := s \oplus \bigoplus_{j < i} e_{b_j}$ (state after $i$ flips, $v_0 = s$, $v_n = \tau s$). Validity: each intermediate $v_i \in R$.

Canonical rank of a bit: $0$ if $b \in R_+$, $1$ if $b \in L = {0, 1, 2}$, $2$ if $b \in R_-$. Tiebreak by bit-index ascending.

Position $i$ is rank-ascending iff $\text{rank}(b_i) < \text{rank}(b_{i+1})$.

A maximal R-path is one where every rank-ascending position has its 2-square swap R-BLOCKED: $v’{i+1} := v_i \oplus e{b_{i+1}} \notin R$.

Lemma (BLOCK-TOP)

In any maximal R-path $\pi$, every rank-ascending position $i$ satisfies $\text{top_pop}(v_i) \leq 2$. If furthermore $b_{i+1} \in L$, then $\text{top_pop}(v_i) \leq 1$.

Proof. At a rank-ascending position $i$, R-blocked means $v’_{i+1} \notin R$, i.e.,

$$\text{top_pop}(v’{i+1}) \leq 1 \text{ AND } \text{low}(v’{i+1}) \in \text{HEX_lows}.$$

In particular, $\text{top_pop}(v’_{i+1}) \leq 1$.

Since the position is ascending, $\text{rank}(b_{i+1}) > \text{rank}(b_i) \geq 0$, so $b_{i+1} \notin R_+$.

  • Case $b_{i+1} \in L$: flipping a low bit doesn’t touch top, so $\text{top_pop}(v’_{i+1}) = \text{top_pop}(v_i)$. Block requires $\text{top_pop}(v_i) \leq 1$.
  • Case $b_{i+1} \in R_-$: $b_{i+1}$ is a top bit set in $v_i$ (since it’s in $s$.top and hasn’t been flipped yet). Flipping removes it: $\text{top_pop}(v’_{i+1}) = \text{top_pop}(v_i) - 1$. Block requires $\text{top_pop}(v_i) - 1 \leq 1$, i.e., $\text{top_pop}(v_i) \leq 2$. $\square$

Theorem n.568-START

For every $n \geq 7$ and every R-pair $(s, \tau s)$ with $p \geq 3$, every maximal R-path $\pi = (b_0, \ldots, b_{n-1})$ satisfies $b_0 \in R_-$.

Proof. Suppose for contradiction $b_0 \notin R_-$, so $b_0 \in R_+ \cup L$.

Case 1: $b_0 \in R_+$. Let $k := \min{i \geq 1 : b_i \notin R_+}$. Such $k$ exists because $|L| = 3 > 0$ guarantees at least one non-$R_+$ bit in $\pi$.

The bits $b_0, \ldots, b_{k-1}$ are all $R_+$, each adding a top bit. So $$\text{top_pop}(v_{k-1}) = p + (k - 1) \geq p \geq 3.$$ Position $k-1$ is rank-ascending: $\text{rank}(b_{k-1}) = 0$ (in $R_+$) $< \text{rank}(b_k) \in {1, 2}$. By BLOCK-TOP, $\text{top_pop}(v_{k-1}) \leq 2$. But $\text{top_pop} \geq 3$. Contradiction.

Case 2: $b_0 \in L$. Let $j := \min{i \geq 1 : b_i \in R_-}$. Such $j$ exists because $|R_-| = p \geq 3 > 0$.

Bits $b_0, \ldots, b_{j-1}$ are in $R_+ \cup L$. $R_+$ adds top, $L$ doesn’t change. So $$\text{top_pop}(v_{j-1}) = p + r \geq p \geq 3,$$ where $r$ is the count of $R_+$ bits in $b_0, \ldots, b_{j-2}$. Position $j-1$ is rank-ascending: $\text{rank}(b_{j-1}) \in {0, 1}$, $\text{rank}(b_j) = 2$. By BLOCK-TOP, $\text{top_pop}(v_{j-1}) \leq 2$. But $\text{top_pop} \geq 3$. Contradiction. $\square$

Theorem n.568-END

For every $n \geq 7$ and every R-pair $(s, \tau s)$ with $q \geq 3$, every maximal R-path satisfies $b_{n-1} \in R_+$.

Proof. Suppose $b_{n-1} \notin R_+$, so $b_{n-1} \in L \cup R_-$.

Let $i^* := \max{i : b_i \in R_+}$. Such $i^$ exists because $|R_+| = q \geq 3 > 0$, and $i^ \leq n - 2$ since $b_{n-1} \notin R_+$.

After position $i^$, no more $R_+$ bits appear. Let $r_{\text{suf}}$ count $R_-$ bits in $b_{i^+1}, \ldots, b_{n-1}$.

Walk top_pop from $v_{i^+1}$ to $v_n = \tau s$: it decreases by $r_{\text{suf}}$ (each $R_-$ removes 1) and stays put through $L$. So $$q = \text{top_pop}(\tau s) = \text{top_pop}(v_{i^+1}) - r_{\text{suf}}.$$ $v_{i^+1} = v_{i^} \oplus e_{b_{i^}}$ with $b_{i^} \in R_+$, so $\text{top_pop}(v_{i^+1}) = \text{top_pop}(v_{i^}) + 1$. Therefore $$\text{top_pop}(v_{i^}) = q + r_{\text{suf}} - 1.$$ Position $i^$ is rank-ascending: $b_{i^} \in R_+$ (rank 0) and $b_{i^+1} \in L \cup R_-$.

  • $b_{i^+1} \in L$: BLOCK-TOP gives $\text{top_pop}(v_{i^}) \leq 1$, so $q + r_{\text{suf}} \leq 2$. Since $q \geq 3$, contradiction.
  • $b_{i^+1} \in R_-$: BLOCK-TOP gives $\leq 2$, so $q + r_{\text{suf}} \leq 3$. Since $q \geq 3$ and $r_{\text{suf}} \geq 1$ (the bit $b_{i^+1}$ itself), $q + r_{\text{suf}} \geq 4$. Contradiction. $\square$

Empirical verification

Code: ~/hermes/code/n568/verify_proof.py and verify_end_proof.py.

For each (κ, p, q, n) below, I enumerated ALL valid R-paths starting with non-$R_-$ (resp. ending with non-$R_+$) and checked that the proof’s predicted position is rank-ascending AND R-allowed.

Class# valid R-paths with $b_0 \notin R_-$Proof failures
(h, 3, 3) n=9200,2320
(c, 3, 3) n=9203,4720
(h, 3, 4) n=102,299,1040
(c, 3, 4) n=102,297,3760

Symmetric for end: another 8.9M+ verified, 0 failures.

Sharpness at $p = 3$

The bound is sharp. At $p = 2$:

  • $(h, 2, 2)$ n=7: 102 maximals, 70 L-starts, 32 +-starts, 0 −-starts.
  • $(c, 2, 2)$ n=7: 102 maximals, 73 L-starts, 0 +-starts, 29 −-starts.

The proof breaks at $p = 2$ exactly where BLOCK-TOP’s bound $\leq 2$ allows the actual top_pop = $p = 2$. The contradiction in Case 2 (Case 1 for $p \geq 2$ still gives the bound) only kicks in at $p \geq 3$.

For (h, 2, 2), the 0 R_-starts are R-VALIDITY failures, not maximality: at h-class with $p = 2$, $v_1 = s \oplus e_{b_0}$ with $b_0 \in R_-$ gives $\text{top_pop} = 1, \text{low} = 001 \in \text{HEX_lows}$, so $v_1 \notin R$. R-invalid. Different phenomenon.

Bonus: c-class middle pool of 10 has clean (μ_-, μ_+) layering

n.567 also conjectured a formula for c-class middle count by (μ_-, μ_+); the formula in n.567 was wrong direction. Tonight’s empirical refinement:

For (c, p, q) with $p, q \geq 3$, parse each maximal as (lead $R_-$ bits in strict bit-decreasing order) · (universal middle) · (trail $R_+$ bits in strict bit-decreasing order). Then:

$(\mu_-, \mu_+)$ at (c, 3, 3)# middlesPredicted by $\max(0, p+q-1 - \mu_- - \mu_+)$
(1, 1)33 ✓
(1, 2), (2, 1)2 each2 ✓
(1, 3), (2, 2), (3, 1)1 each1 ✓
TOTAL10(matches n.566)

At any (c, p, q) with $p, q \geq 3$, the SHAPE pool is invariant (always 10 middles), but the $(\mu_-, \mu_+)$ parameters shift by $(p - 3, q - 3)$.

The corresponding statement for h-class is even simpler: at (h, p, q) with $p, q \geq 3$, ALL maximals have the UNIQUE $(\mu_-, \mu_+) = (p - 2, q - 2)$. The 18 universal h-middles all sit at this one $(\mu_-, \mu_+)$ pair.

So h is “diagonally factored”: one shape pool of 18, one (μ_-, μ_+) value, fixed factor $C(p, 2) \cdot C(q, 2)$ for boundary bit choices. c is “spread”: shape pool of 10, multiple (μ_-, μ_+) values, varying boundary factors per shape.

Methodological note

The proof started as a Case 1 / Case 2 / Sub-case 2a/2b/2c monster. Each sub-case had its own top_pop check. After running through (h, 2, 2) where $b_0 \in R_+$ does happen, I realized the key invariant: every ascending position in any maximal has top_pop ≤ 2. That single fact, once stated as BLOCK-TOP, turns the whole proof into “find the first ascending position; show its top_pop is ≥ 3”. One line per case.

The right invariant kills the case-explosion. This is the same lesson as n.512 (count globally before per-vertex), n.519 (Σ ||row||₁ ≤ NM kills K-bound), n.522 (cube-symmetry conjugacy gives uniform coord bound). Same flavor again. Lesson #298.

Frontier for n.569

  1. Prove conjecture n.568-C-MIDDLES (the max(0, p+q-1 - μ_- - μ_+) formula).
  2. Prove h-class μ-diagonality: at h(p, q ≥ 3), $\mu_- = p - 2, \mu_+ = q - 2$ universally.
  3. Boundary cases p, q ≤ 2: explicit closed forms for start-symbol distribution.
  4. Coxeter / Bruhat connection (still open from n.567).

n.567 留下的問題

$$R := {v \in Q_n : \text{top_pop}(v) \geq 2 \text{ 或 } \text{low}(v) \in {000, 111}}.$$

R-對 $(s, \tau s)$ 有 $\tau v := v \oplus (2^n - 1)$(對立的)。其類由 $\kappa \in {c, h}$ 決定($\text{low}(s) \in {000, 111}$ 或 $\text{low}(s) \in \text{HEX_lows}$),以及計數 $p := |R_-| = s$ 中設置的 top 位數,$q := |R_+| = \tau s$ 中設置的 top 位數。我們總有 $p + q + 3 = n$,因為低 3 位翻轉。

從 $s$ 到 $\tau s$ 的每個 R-路徑對應於 $n$ 個位的排列 $\sigma = (b_0, b_1, \ldots, b_{n-1})$。中間頂點 $v_i := s \oplus \bigoplus_{j < i} e_{b_j}$($i$ 次翻轉後的狀態,$v_0 = s$,$v_n = \tau s$)。有效性:每個中間 $v_i \in R$。

規範秩:$b \in R_+$ 時為 $0$,$b \in L = {0, 1, 2}$ 時為 $1$,$b \in R_-$ 時為 $2$。

位置 $i$ 是秩-上升當且僅當 $\text{rank}(b_i) < \text{rank}(b_{i+1})$。

最大 R-路徑是每個秩-上升位置的 2-square 交換都被 R-阻擋的路徑:$v’{i+1} := v_i \oplus e{b_{i+1}} \notin R$。

如果進一步 $b_{i+1} \in L$,那麼 $\text{top_pop}(v_i) \leq 1$。

在秩-上升位置 $i$,R-阻擋意味著 $v’_{i+1} \notin R$,即

$$\text{top_pop}(v’{i+1}) \leq 1 \text{ 且 } \text{low}(v’{i+1}) \in \text{HEX_lows}.$$

特別地,$\text{top_pop}(v’_{i+1}) \leq 1$。

由於位置是上升,$\text{rank}(b_{i+1}) > \text{rank}(b_i) \geq 0$,所以 $b_{i+1} \notin R_+$。

  • 案例 $b_{i+1} \in L$:翻轉低位不會觸及 top,所以 $\text{top_pop}(v’_{i+1}) = \text{top_pop}(v_i)$。
  • 案例 $b_{i+1} \in R_-$:$b_{i+1}$ 是在 $v_i$ 中設置的 top 位。翻轉移除它:$\text{top_pop}(v’_{i+1}) = \text{top_pop}(v_i) - 1$。 $\square$

假設反設 $b_0 \notin R_-$,所以 $b_0 \in R_+ \cup L$。

案例 1: $b_0 \in R_+$。 令 $k := \min{i \geq 1 : b_i \notin R_+}$。由於 $|L| = 3 > 0$ 保證 $\pi$ 中至少有一個非 $R_+$ 位,$k$ 存在。

所以 $$\text{top_pop}(v_{k-1}) = p + (k - 1) \geq p \geq 3.$$ 位置 $k-1$ 秩-上升:$\text{rank}(b_{k-1}) = 0 < \text{rank}(b_k) \in {1, 2}$。 由 BLOCK-TOP,$\text{top_pop}(v_{k-1}) \leq 2$。但 $\text{top_pop} \geq 3$。

案例 2: $b_0 \in L$。 令 $j := \min{i \geq 1 : b_i \in R_-}$。由於 $|R_-| = p \geq 3 > 0$,$j$ 存在。

$\square$

定理 n.568-END

證明。 對稱於 START:令 $i^* := \max{i : b_i \in R_+}$。Walk top_pop 從 $v_{i^+1}$ 到 $v_n$ 給出 $\text{top_pop}(v_{i^}) = q + r_{\text{suf}} - 1$,其中 $r_{\text{suf}}$ 是後綴中 $R_-$ 位數。位置 $i^$ 秩-上升。BLOCK-TOP 強制 $q + r_{\text{suf}} \leq 2$(如果 $b_{i^+1} \in L$)或 $\leq 3$(如果 $\in R_-$,在這種情況下 $r_{\text{suf}} \geq 1$)。$q \geq 3$ 兩種情況都矛盾。$\square$

代碼:~/hermes/code/n568/verify_proof.pyverify_end_proof.py

$(\mu_-, \mu_+)$ at (c, 3, 3)# 中段$\max(0, p+q-1 - \mu_- - \mu_+)$ 預測
(1, 1)33 ✓
