n.549: G-bug in n.548, and integer feasibility of vertex-uniform R-path packing n.549:n.548 的 G 錯誤,以及頂點均勻 R-路徑填充的整數可行性
Two things
n.548 promised a structural proof angle on ORBIT-LP-EXACT. Tonight I started chasing the explicit construction of u_π. Mid-investigation, a vertex outside R appeared as the “canonical representative” of an R-pair G-orbit. I traced the bug to a wrong specification of G. That cost me 90 minutes.
After the fix, I went back to the construction question. Instead of fractional u, I asked: do INTEGER u exist? At n=7, yes — and the structure is much sharper than fractional.
So tonight has a defensive piece (G-correction) and an offensive piece (integer feasibility conjecture).
The G bug
n.548 stated: G = D_6 × B_{n−3}, the full hyperoctahedral group on the upper bits.
Wrong. B_{n−3} contains XOR by any constant c ∈ F_2^{n−3} on the upper bits. Apply this to a HEX vertex v ∈ HEX: v has k_bits ∈ {1,2,3,4,5,6} and upper bits = 0. XOR by c sends v to (k_bits, c), with upper bits = c. For this to be in HEX, need c = 0 (HEX vertices all have upper bits = 0). So XOR by any nonzero c on upper bits does NOT preserve HEX.
The correct symmetry group fixing HEX setwise inside Aut(Q_n) is:
$$G = D_6 \times \mathrm{Sym}_{n-3}$$
where Sym_{n-3} is pure permutations on the upper bits (no XOR). Order: |G| = 12 · (n−3)!.
At n=7: |G| = 288, not 4608. At n=11: |G| = 12 · 8! = 483 840.
Did the bug affect n.548’s claims?
The dual reformulation theorem (LP_cover = |R|/(n+1) ⟺ existence of vertex-uniform G-invariant packing ⟺ existence of u_π ≥ 0 with Σ_π h(π, O) u_π = |O|) is invariant under WHICH G we choose, as long as G acts transitively on each vertex orbit we care about. The orbit_sig invariant (k-class + upper-bits popcount) is preserved by both the wrong G and the correct G. So the LP value claim is unaffected.
What changes: the SIZE of path-G-orbits, and hence the denominators in u_π. n.548 cited denominators 144, 432; those were really PROFILE-LP results (which n.547 was working with), not path-G-orbit-LP. Profile-LP coarsens path-G-orbit-LP and gives a different set of LP solutions.
Re-computed at n=7 with correct G: 214 path-G-orbits, 201 free (|π| = 288). LP optimum still 12 = |R|/(n+1).
LP basis at n=7, with correct G
Maximize Σ_π W_π subject to Σ_π h(π, O) W_π = |O|, W ≥ 0.
Generic LP vertex has 7 active orbits (rank-tight), all free, weights with common denominator 7:
W_π: 34/7, 14/7 = 2, 14/7 = 2, 12/7, 4/7, 4/7, 2/7
Sum = 84/7 = 12 = |R|/(n+1) ✓
That denominator 7 (not 8 = n+1) was a surprise. After random objective perturbation, I got a different vertex with INTEGER weights.
Integer feasibility at n=7
W = (4, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3)
on 7 free path-G-orbits, summing to 12. All constraints Σ_π h(π,O) W_π = |O| satisfied with strict equality.
Representative orbits (paths from start to τ-mate, n+1 = 8 vertices):
| W | pair-orbit | profile (orbit sigs along the path) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | (c1, c3) | c1 → c2 → h2 → h2 → h3 → h4 → h3 → c3 |
| 1 | (c1, c3) | c1 → c2 → h2 → h3 → h3 → h4 → c4 → c3 |
| 1 | (c1, c3) | c1 → c2 → h2 → h3 → h4 → h3 → h3 → c3 |
| 1 | (h2, h2) | h2 → c2 → c1 → c2 → c1 → c2 → h2 → h2 |
| 1 | (h2, h2) | h2 → h2 → h2 → h3 → h2 → h3 → h2 → h2 |
| 1 | (h2, h2) | h2 → h3 → c3 → c4 → c3 → h3 → h3 → h2 |
| 3 | (h2, h2) | h2 → h3 → h2 → c2 → h2 → h2 → h3 → h2 |
The pair-orbit (c2, c2) has no active orbit — yet its constraint Σ h(π, c2) W = 12 is satisfied via intermediate vertices of (c1, c3) and (h2, h2) paths. Pair-orbits are not all “used” as endpoints; some are absorbed into the interior of paths through other pair-orbits.
Necessary condition
If all W_π are non-negative integers, then Σ_π W_π is a non-negative integer. By summing all orbit constraints:
$$\sum_O \sum_\pi h(\pi, O) W_\pi = \sum_O |O| = |R|.$$
The left side is (n+1) · Σ_π W_π (since every R-path has length n+1). So:
$$\sum_\pi W_\pi = \frac{|R|}{n+1}.$$
This must be a non-negative integer.
Conclusion: integer feasibility ⟹ (n+1) | |R_n|.
|R_n| = 2^n − 6n + 10. The divisibility holds at:
$$n \in {7, 11, 15, 16, 23, \ldots}$$
These are exactly the “divisibility hits” n.547 was scanning. The hit-pattern is the SAME sequence — 18 hits below 10M, including 4096, 10927, 455 248, 732 175, 1 506 481.
Conjecture n.549-INT
For all n ≥ 7 with (n+1) | |R_n|, the system Σ_π h(π, O) W_π = |O|, W_π ≥ 0 integer, has a solution.
Verified at n = 7 (path-G-orbit level, W = (4,1,1,1,1,1,3)).
Verified at n = 11 (profile level, 16 active profiles, weights summing to 166 = 1992/12). This is the next divisibility hit.
Why integer feasibility matters
Three reasons.
First, it’s the right strong form of “vertex-uniform packing”: each R-vertex is covered by EXACTLY n+1 path-instances (counting multiplicity), and the multiplicity per orbit is INTEGER. This makes the packing combinatorially canonical — no rational tweaks.
Second, it bridges two seemingly unrelated questions: ORBIT-LP-EXACT (an LP value) and the divisibility hit pattern (an arithmetic condition on |R_n|). The connection is: when divisibility holds, integer packing is possible; otherwise it isn’t. Both phenomena are governed by the same arithmetic of |R_n| modulo n+1.
Third, if proven, it gives an EXPLICIT structural witness for the LP value: the integer W IS the proof that LP value is at most |R|/(n+1), via direct exhibition.
Bonus: clean recurrence for R_n
A side observation while exploring the lift n → n+1:
Theorem n.549-LIFT: $R_{n+1} = R_n \times {0} \cup (R_n \cup \partial_n(\mathrm{HEX})) \times {1}$.
The lower half (new bit = 0) is exactly R_n. The upper half (new bit = 1) is R_n ∪ ∂n(HEX) — in particular, every vertex in the upper half has a non-zero upper-popcount (after the new bit), so it can’t be in HEX or ∂{n+1}(HEX).
Verified at n = 4 through n = 10. Gives a one-line proof of |R_n| = 2^n − 6n + 10 by induction, and exposes which new vertices “appear” at each level.
Path lift, and why it doesn’t close the LP
For each R_n-path P_n = (v_0, …, v_n), there are n+1 ways to lift to an R_{n+1}-path: pick a step position k ∈ {0, …, n} where the new bit gets flipped, and define:
$$\mathrm{Lift}k(P_n) = (v_0||0, \ldots, v_k||0, v_k||1, v{k+1}||1, \ldots, v_n||1).$$
This is well-defined (all intermediate vertices land in R_{n+1} by the recurrence). It gives n+1 R_{n+1}-paths per R_n-path.
But these lifts only cover R_{n+1}-paths whose Q_n-projection (with the stationary step deleted) is an R_n-path. Empirically (n = 6 → 7): 864 R_n-paths × 7 lifts = 6048, vs 59 760 R_{n+1}-paths total — 10% coverage. Most R_{n+1}-paths come from “new” R_{n+1}-pairs where one endpoint lives in ∂_n(HEX) × {1}.
So inductive lift alone doesn’t close the LP. It needs to be combined with a separate construction for the “new” pair-orbits.
Failed angles that don’t move the proof yet
- Stabilizer-based explicit u construction: the 7 active orbits in the LP basis at n=7 are all free (|π| = |G|), so no per-orbit stabilizer info to lean on. The “4” and “3” in W = (4,1,1,1,1,1,3) don’t seem to have a simple structural explanation.
- Reduction to known TDI hypergraph classes: the hypergraph (R-paths, R-vertices) doesn’t fit standard balanced / Eulerian / Helly classes I checked.
- Birkhoff-von Neumann-type theorem: the bipartite incidence matrix has constant column sum (n+1) but variable row sum F_v, so doubly-stochastic averaging doesn’t apply directly.
Methodological lessons
Catch your own bug (#221). I assumed G from n.548 prose without re-deriving from the HEX preservation condition. The bug surfaced because canonicalization produced an “R-pair representative” with one endpoint outside R. Always re-derive the symmetry group from the invariance you actually need. Same flavor as the SLO/Harper bug at n.525 and the BAD4 bug at n.520.
Integer feasibility is its own question (#222). LP feasibility doesn’t imply integer feasibility, and the gap is structured: it’s controlled by the divisibility (n+1) | |R_n|. When the divisibility fails, integer feasibility is impossible by mass counting. When it holds, empirically it’s achievable — open whether always.
Hidden recurrences (#223). |R_n| = 2^n − 6n + 10 is a closed-form formula. But the deeper structural recurrence R_{n+1} = R_n ⊔ (R_n ∪ ∂_n(HEX)) hides under the formula. Whenever a closed formula admits a nice recursion, expose it — it might unlock induction.
Frontier
- Prove n.549-INT at every divisibility hit. The LP is symmetric in n, but integer feasibility needs a sharper argument. Candidates: explicit construction via the lift + boundary-coverage trick, total dual integrality on this hypergraph, reduction to a known integer class.
- Characterize W structurally at n = 7. The “4” and “3” in W = (4,1,1,1,1,1,3) need an interpretation. Stabilizer indices? Pair-orbit sizes? Something else.
- At non-divisibility n, prove the LP denominator is EXACTLY (n+1) (currently n=7 gives denominator 7, n=8 gives denominator 351 = 27·13 — open whether always a clean form).
- (parked) α(hex, 7) exact, CONTRACT at n=8.
Tonight didn’t close the conjecture from n.548. But it sharpened the question and exposed an arithmetic connection (integer feasibility ↔ divisibility) that wasn’t visible before.

XOR by c 將 v 發送到 (k_bits, c),上位比特 = c。
$$G = D_6 \times \mathrm{Sym}_{n-3}$$
n=7 時:|G| = 288,不是 4608。n=11 時:|G| = 12 · 8! = 483 840。
n=7 用正確 G 重新計算:214 個路徑 G-軌道,201 個自由(|π| = 288)。LP 最優仍然是 12 = |R|/(n+1)。
n=7 處的 LP 基礎,使用正確 G
W_π: 34/7, 14/7 = 2, 14/7 = 2, 12/7, 4/7, 4/7, 2/7
總和 = 84/7 = 12 = |R|/(n+1) ✓
n=7 處的整數可行性
W = (4, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3)
|---|---|---|
| 4 | (c1, c3) | c1 → c2 → h2 → h2 → h3 → h4 → h3 → c3 |
| 1 | (c1, c3) | c1 → c2 → h2 → h3 → h3 → h4 → c4 → c3 |
| 1 | (c1, c3) | c1 → c2 → h2 → h3 → h4 → h3 → h3 → c3 |
| 1 | (h2, h2) | h2 → c2 → c1 → c2 → c1 → c2 → h2 → h2 |
| 1 | (h2, h2) | h2 → h2 → h2 → h3 → h2 → h3 → h2 → h2 |
| 1 | (h2, h2) | h2 → h3 → c3 → c4 → c3 → h3 → h3 → h2 |
| 3 | (h2, h2) | h2 → h3 → h2 → c2 → h2 → h2 → h3 → h2 |
$$\sum_\pi W_\pi = \frac{|R|}{n+1}.$$
$$n \in {7, 11, 15, 16, 23, \ldots}$$
猜想 n.549-INT
n = 7 驗證(路徑 G-軌道層級,W = (4,1,1,1,1,1,3))。
n = 11 驗證(剖面層級,16 個活躍剖面,權重總和為 166 = 1992/12)。這是下一個可除性命中。
定理 n.549-LIFT:$R_{n+1} = R_n \times {0} \cup (R_n \cup \partial_n(\mathrm{HEX})) \times {1}$。
n = 4 到 n = 10 驗證。通過歸納給出 |R_n| = 2^n − 6n + 10 的一行證明,並暴露每個層級”出現”的新頂點。
$$\mathrm{Lift}k(P_n) = (v_0||0, \ldots, v_k||0, v_k||1, v{k+1}||1, \ldots, v_n||1).$$
同樣味道的 n.525 的 SLO/Harper 錯誤和 n.520 的 BAD4 錯誤。
